Another thing that is useful for importing W3D files into RenX/Gmax is Coolfile W3D importer:

Download locations:

Hi.
I have installed Gmax12 and RenX & W3D Viewer. Also copy the W3D importer in GMax
Now get an error wenn try open a W3D model.
In the open file box it noticing the file extention but cant open file.
Or wenn try to import a file: No appropriate import module found/improper file format.

What did i do wrong?

You cannot open W3D from the open file menu, you must run the importer script to open it.

Some download useful links here:
http://www.scenery.org/design_utilities_gmax.htm

They include

Gmax v1.2 Registration Utility to register the program since Autodesk no longer supports Gmax

3DS Importer

WCVT2POV allows 3D files to be converted from one format to another

3D models you can download (set the price range to 0 0 to find the free ones.

Most have too high a polygon count for Generals but you can reduce the polygon count

Here's a useful link on how to skin headlights, searchlight beams, fences,
propellers, muzzlefxs and other transparent objects.

How to make MuzzleFX,s Lightbeams and night buildingas in
Generals
http://forum.cncreneclips.com/index.php?showtopic=19428

For propellers, use Blend Mode: Alpha rather then "Add" in the Renegade Material
Editor Pass 1 section.

And here are links on how to make animated blinking lights / flashing lights:
http://www.calcots.co.uk/FlashingLightsTutorial.html

http://www.renhelp.net/index.php?mod=Tutor...view&id=137

Note: Whenever you make changes using the materials editor, do not use the "export using std mtls" button. Use instead the export from the file menu.

New links for stuff you need to use Gmax with:

Gmax 1.2
http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

Gmax 1.2 registry patch
http://planetcnc.gamespy.com/View.php?view...tail&id=365
gMax was abandoned by AutoDesk on October 6, 2005. They also made it impossible to register new installations of gMax. This registry work-around contains files and intstructions on bypassing the registration system, allowing new installations of the free gMax 1.2 tool. Install gMax 1.2 first, then follow the instructions in this archive. Instructions sont aussi en Français.

RenX as part of renegade tools, install this after installing Gmax
RenegadeToolsInstaller2.exe
ftp://ftp.westwood.com/pub/renegade/tools/

Lastly install:
Coolfile W3D importer
http://www.the3rdage.net/item-352
instructions on how to install it:

Nvidia Texture Tools for handling DDS texture files

http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nv_texture_tools.html

The DDS thumbnail viewer is quite handy.

If you don't have photoshop you can use Irfan view which is freeware to edit DDS files:
http://www.irfanview.com/

You need to install the irfan view plugins package as well.
